Not all invisible grill wire is the same, and the difference shows up years later, not on installation day. The wire used in professional installations is stainless steel, most commonly grade 304, chosen for its resistance to rust and its tensile strength relative to its thickness. In coastal or high-humidity locations, marine-grade 316 stainless is often the better choice, since it holds up against salt-laden air that accelerates corrosion in lesser-grade steel. The gauge, or thickness, of the wire is equally important: too thin and the grill loses its load-bearing purpose, too thick and it starts to visually compete with the very view it's meant to preserve.

Spacing between wires is a deliberate engineering decision, not an aesthetic one. It needs to be tight enough that a child cannot slip a limb or head through the gap, yet wide enough that the grill remains nearly invisible from a normal viewing distance. This is combined with a tensioning system — turnbuckles or similar hardware at the anchor points — that keeps every wire taut under load. A grill that sags loses both its safety function and its clean appearance over time.

Anchoring matters just as much as the wire itself. MS grills are heavy, visually block a significant portion of the window or balcony opening, and require repainting every few years to keep rust at bay, especially in humid or coastal climates where oxidation sets in quickly. They also permanently alter the look of a building's façade, which is one reason many housing societies now restrict or discourage them.

Nylon or polyethylene safety nets are a lighter, cheaper alternative often used for balconies or to keep pigeons out, but they aren't built for the same purpose. Netting sags over time, discolors and weakens under continuous UV exposure, and is generally not rated to arrest a fall or bear sustained weight the way a properly tensioned steel-wire system is. Stainless steel is chosen for invisible grills precisely because it resists corrosion better than most alternatives, but 'resistant' doesn't mean immune. Maharashtra and Gujarat's coastal stretches bring salt-laden air, and the region's monsoon months bring sustained humidity and driving rain — both conditions that, over years, can dull a wire's finish or, in poorly maintained installations, encourage surface rust at anchor points where water tends to collect. A wipe-down with a mild soap solution every few months, avoiding harsh acidic or abrasive cleaners, keeps the wire's protective finish intact.

Beyond cleaning, periodic tension checks matter. Steel wire can loosen slightly over years of thermal expansion and contraction, seasonal humidity swings, and repeated minor impact — a pet leaning against it, monsoon winds, an accidental knock. A grill that has quietly gone slack still looks fine from a distance but is no longer performing at its rated capacity. Checking for visible slack, corrosion at joints, or damaged anchor points once or twice a year catches problems while they're minor.
